Paint-system maintenance

Why paint systems need regular dry ice blasting

Routine cleaning protects the line, the crew, and the finish. Dry ice blasting is how Indigo removes overspray without sand, water, or leftover blasting media.

  1. 01

The #1 Reason: Fire & Combustion Risk

Overspray and combustible residue routinely accumulate in exhaust stacks, fans, and caps, creating a combustible fire hazard. Many insurance companies require facilities to clean their stacks as a condition of coverage.

  2. 02

Reason #2: Reduced Airflow Volume & Quality Defects

Overspray coats fan blades, making them less efficient and causing significantly reduced airflow. Paint droplets that should be pulled into the filters instead fall on parts, creating quality defects.

  3. 03

Reason #3: Catastrophic Equipment & Production Failure

Heavy accumulation on fan blades and drive motors leads to bearing and motor failures. It also can cause conveyor chains and drive motors to bind or fail. Either problem brings your paint production line to a complete halt until costly emergency repairs are finished.

How dry ice blasting works

Dry ice blasting uses compressed air and recycled carbon dioxide pellets. Three things happen at once:

  1. Kinetic impactcompressed air drives the pellets into the surface and shears away grease, overspray, and other buildup without scratching the substrate.
  2. Thermal shockat -109°F, the pellets hit warmer coatings and make them shrink and turn brittle, so the bond to the metal breaks cleanly.
  3. Rapid sublimationon impact the pellets vaporize and expand to about 800 times their solid volume, helping lift loosened particles off the surface.

No secondary blasting media

Unlike sand, water, or chemical media, dry ice does not leave a secondary blasting media behind. It turns to gas, so crews are left with the removed contaminant to sweep or vacuum. Dry ice is also softer than industrial steel and the process is moisture-free, which means motors, panels, and other in-place equipment can often be cleaned without introducing water, warping, or humidity-related rust.

What Indigo cleans

Indigo uses Dry Ice Blasting technology to clean industrial painting operations to remove overspray and other unwanted buildup from all the system components including paint stacks, stack exhaust fans and motors, and all types of rooftop stack caps. In addition we clean paint booth filter frames, filter plenums, spraying equipment, robotic applicating equipment, parts conveyors (chain drives, gondolas, frames and rails), and the paint booths themselves.
